In the realm of fashion, several aspects are important, and the fit of clothing is among them. While working as a fitting room specialist at Banana Republic, I gained some insights into achieving the perfect fit. Here are some key points to consider:
Knowing your measurements
- The shape of the female body is largely determined by genetics and skeletal structure. Although exercise and hormone levels can slightly alter your body shape, it is primarily defined by your bone structure and the distribution of fat and muscle. Measure yourself to find your perfect fit.
Key body measurements consist of bust, waist, hips, inseam, outseam, neck, shoulder width, sleeve length, and frequently, the length from neck to waist.
How to Measure Yourself
Bust: Measure around the fullest part of the bust, ensuring the tape is level and comfortable.
Waist: Measure around the natural waistline, the smallest part of the torso.
Hips: Measure around the fullest part of the hips, typically a few inches below the waist.
Inseam: Measure the inner leg seam, from the crotch to the desired hemline.
Outseam: Measure the outer leg seam, from the waist to the desired hemline.
Neck: Measure around the base of the neck, with a little extra space for comfort.
Shoulder Width: Measure across the back from one shoulder point to the other.
Sleeve Length: Measure from the shoulder point to the wrist.
Neck to Waist: Measure from the base of the neck to the natural waistline.
Finding out your body shape
- There are 5 Basic Body shapes that you should be aware of. Each of these shapes has a prominent characteristic. They are The Rectangle, The Pear, The Hourglass, The Inverted Triangle, and The Apple.
The Rectangle resembles a column, meaning the body is straight with minimal or no definition.
The Pear has a larger lower body in relation to its upper body.
The Hourglass features a broader upper and lower body with a slender waist in between.
The Inverted Triangle features a larger upper body in relation to the lower body.
The Apple shape features a broader middle and upper body with a narrower lower body.
Finding a great tailor
- It might seem a bit traditional, but discovering a tailor skilled in altering your clothes can be beneficial in the long term. I've extended the lifespan of many garments simply by having them repaired and tailored. Ideally, your local dry cleaners will have an excellent tailor; if not, finding one should be a priority on your to-do list.
Whether your shopping for work or personal, finding the right fit should always be on your to do list. The more you know.
Stay tuned for more fashion updates.
